TMJ and TMD Treatment

How does TMJ disorder occur?

TMJ disorder/TMD encompasses a wide range of jaw joint dysfunctions. As the mechanisms that connect the upper and lower jaws, the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) allow you to chew, yawn, and speak with ease. When factors such as teeth clenching, grinding, arthritis, or inflammation prevent the TMJs from working properly, this impairment can manifest in headaches, jaw pain, as well as a clicking/popping noise when the mouth opens. An accurate diagnosis is critical for successful treatment.
Our Calgary dentists are experienced in the identification and treatment of TMD.

Most times if the problem is muscular or within the joint, it will get better over time. For this reason our Calgary dentist use conservative treatments first. But in some cases, surgery or other procedures, such as injections, may be recommended.

What are the Symptoms of TMJ Disorder?

Cases of TMJ disorder often range in severity and symptoms may affect one or both sides of the face. They can be temporary or exacerbate with time, depending on the unique physiology of your oral structures. In general, patients often experience:
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening and closing the mouth
  • Locking or stiffness of the jaw
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Headaches and migraines
  • A tired feeling in the face
  • Sore facial muscles
  • Pain in the jaw, head, temples, neck, or shoulders
  • Swelling on the side(s) of the face
  • A ringing in the ears
